Clovis soldier dies in Iraq

A soldier from Clovis died in Iraq on Friday, the Department of Defense confirmed today.

Sgt. Leroy Segura Jr., 23, died of injuries he received in a vehicle accident while serving in Habbaniyah, Iraq, a news release from DoD reported.

Segura was in a Humvee that rolled while maneuvering over a river levee, according to officials with the public affairs office at Fort Benning, Ga. There were no other casualties in the unit, the officials said.

Segura’s unit was responsible for building and maintaining Army bridges, according to the Army.

Segura was assigned to the 362nd Engineer Company, 54th Engineer Battalion. Assigned to Fort Benning on June 10, Segura’s unit deployed to Iraq on July 5, the Army reported.

He enlisted in the Army in October 2002, Army officials said.
Segura graduated from Clovis High School in 2001, according to school officials.
