Clovis High’s girls will have to wait until this morning to find out whether they’ll play for third place or the championship in the Clovis Invitational at Yucca Soccer Complex.
The Lady Wildcats beat the Clovis junior varsity 9-0 in the opening match of the tournament, then pulled out a 2-2 tie against Artesia with the help of an own-goal in the second half. Clovis finished 1-0-1 in Pool A play.
CHS will win its pool and advance to the 5 p.m. championship match if the Lady Cats JV can play Artesia closer than it played the varsity; if Artesia wins by more than nine goals, the Lady Bulldogs will go into the finals and the Clovis varsity will play for third at 3 p.m.
“I think our legs got out from under us (against Artesia),” CHS girls soccer coach Shane Leatherwood said. “We had (other) opportunies, too. Sometimes you get them, sometimes you don’t.”
Clovis played without senior forward Calie Rush (strained quad), who is sitting out the tournament to rest her injury.
“We were able to tie them without Callie,” Leatherwood said. “She adds an extra dimension to our offense.”
The Lady Cats tied the match with just under 18 minutes left when CHS senior Jordan Garrett’s corner kick to the front of the net was inadvertantly tapped into the goal by an Artesia player trying to clear it.
Clovis pulled into a 1-1 tie midway through the first half when sophomore Jasiman Dykes scored on a penalty kick after the Lady Bulldogs were called for a handball inside the 18-yard box.
Ashlee Atwood scored the match’s first goal for Artesia just 3 1/2 minutes into the contest, and the Lady Bulldogs (0-1-1) took a 2-1 lead when junior forward Randi Smith scored on a breakaway when she beat CHS goalkeeper Britni Jiminez with about 18 minutes left in the half.
The Lady Cats made short work of the junior varsity, with Garrett scoring two of her four goals in the first nine minutes. Junior Keli Helm added a pair of goals for Clovis, while Tiffany Reid, Jasiman Dykes and Patrice Dykes each added one goal.
