A sex offender was found guilty of failing to register by a Clovis jury Monday afternoon. Immediately following the verdict, 9th Judicial District Judge Joe Parker gave Elmer Ray Burke the maximum sentence of 18 months imprisonment with the Department of Corrections, according to a release from the district attorney’s office.

Because of a sexual abuse of a child conviction in 1978 and a first-degree sexual assault conviction in 1988, Burke, 55, was required by state law to register each year as a sex offender, according to the release.

In 2005, Burke failed to register by the imposed Dec. 31 deadline and a warrant was issued for his arrest, the release said. His imprisonment will be followed by one year parole, and he will be required to register as a sex offender.
