The Clovis girls soccer team ended its season Saturday at home with a 2-0 non-district victory over Artesia, finishing off the high school careers of seven seniors.
Both Clovis goals came in the second half, as junior midfielder Lora Esquivel scored in the 44th minute before senior Britni Jimenez, who moved out of goal to midfield, gave Clovis some breathing room in the 65th minute. Jimenez also recorded three saves.
Senior midfielder Jordan Garrett assisted both goals for the Lady Wildcats (5-11-2).
Junior goal keeper Celsey Eldridge filled in for Jimenez and kept the shutout intact with one save.
The Lady Cats outshot Artesia 13-5 and held a 7-1 edge in corner kicks.
“It was nice to send the seniors off with a win,” Clovis coach Shane Leatherwood said. “We have some seniors who have been on the team since eighth grade.”
Despite Clovis’ sub-.500 record, Leatherwood said he is excited about next season.
“It was a good learning year,” the first-year Clovis coach said. “They learned and I learned.”
