CHS CROSS COUNTRY: Lady Cats’ Schenck ninth at state meet

RIO RANCHO — Try as they might, Clovis High’s girls couldn’t make up for the loss of their top runner on Saturday.

With sophomore Caitlin Waters still recovering from walking pneumonia and limited to the role of spectator, the Lady Wildcats finished eighth with 199 points in Class 5A state competition hosted by Rio Rancho.

Freshman Michelle Schenck earned all-state honors, though, by cracking the top 10 — she finished ninth in the five-kilometer race in a time of 19 minutes, 57 seconds. Junior Nicole Johnson came in 19th in 20:19.

“Michelle ran a really great race,” CHS coach Mark Bussen said, adding that he believed Schenck was the first Lady Cats runner to finish in the top 10 at state in at least nine years. “She didn’t get out that well the first two miles, but then she just flew past people.

“Nicole Johnson had a good first two miles and then faded just a little bit.”

Clovis’ boys were 12th in team standings with 321 points. Freshman Seth Zarate led the Wildcats by placing 46th overall in 17:27.

Bussen said he thinks Waters could have finished in the top three had she been physcially able to compete. Had that been the case, the Lady Cats would have moved up to fourth place.

With only one runner graduating, Bussen said the girls have a chance to come back with a strong showing in 2007. “I think some seeds were planted for their goals for next year,” he said.

Bussen had hoped his top five boys runners could maximize their potential by running in a relative pack. The next four behind Zarate were all close, but they were about 40 seconds behind him.

Bussen said the Cats’ lead runner this season, senior James Chavez, was a bit under the weather with a chest cold. He finished 68th in a time of 18:04.

“All in all, the boys ran well,” Bussen said. “We just need to improve a little more.”

Gallup took the boys team championship, while Eldorado’s Matt Tebo was the individual winner in 15:25. Eldorado ran away with the girls’ team title, while Valley’s Elba Holguin was the individual winner in 18:53.

In Class 4A, Albuquerque Academy’s boys and Los Alamos’ girls were the team champion. St. Michael’s swept both Class 3A team titles while Navajo Pine did likewise in Class 1A-2A.
