Nestled in the Depot District of Lubbock is the Cactus Theater. Starting life in 1938 as a motion picture theater, the facility was remodeled in 1993 and has since become a performance theater.

“We now do live musical productions and plays,” said Tasha Starkey, Don Caldwell Productions administrative director.

According to Starkey, Caldwell and a group of area investors remodeled the theater and turned it into a performance venue. The theater is home to many shows throughout the year, said Starkey.

“We have a show at least every weekend,” she said.

During the remodel, the theater was tailored for live performances, instead of movies as in the past. But Caldwell and his group did choose to keep many of the theater’s original features.

“We did retain the balcony, sloped floor and the stage,” said Starkey.
Local artist John Russell Thomason was hired to paint murals on the walls, said Starkey.

During this holiday season, the theater will play host to several shows. Scheduled to appear are the Flying J Wranglers (who appear at 7 p.m. tonight at the Lyceum Theatre in Clovis) on Sunday, Gary Morris on Monday and Michael Martin Murphey’s Cowboy Christmas on Thursday.

The Cactus Family Christmas will be performed tonight, Friday, and Dec. 23, said Starkey.

Overwhelming response to some of the shows has prompted performances to be added. The Flying J Wranglers and Michael Martin Murphey will hold two performances on their selected days.

Tickets for the Gary Morris concert Monday are sold out, said Starkey.

Information obtained from the Cactus Theater Web site indicates the performances are family friendly. A concession stand is available on the premises, serving drinks and snack-type food items, the Web site reads.
