MELROSE — Kaylynn Johnson and Rachel Chavez scored 10 points each and Fort Sumner beat Melrose when it counted the most — with a state tournament berth on the line.
The third-seeded Vixens hit 10-of-14 free throws in the final four minutes of the fourth quarter Wednesday and beat the second-seeded Lady Buffs 35-28.
With their first win in three tries against Melrose this season, the Vixens (16-8) earned a shot at top-seeded Elida in Friday’s district tournament title game and a spot in the 16-team state tournament field.
Johnson hit 8-of-14 free throws while Chavez had two of Fort Sumner’s three 3-pointers.
Zanessa Dodd led Melrose (17-10) with eight points.
