Of note: The teams are meeting at state for the fourth consecutive year. Clovis won in the 2004 and 2005 quarterfinals, while the Bengals prevailed in last year’s semifinal en route to the title. … The Lady Cats are on a 12-game winning streak. Their last losses were in back-to-back road games against 5A top seed Mayfield and Texas Class 3A champion Canyon in early January. … Junior G Ebony Bunton scored 19 points and senior G Tori Northcutt added 14 in CHS’ first-round win over Cruces. … Clovis converted 50 percent of its field goals (21-of-42) versus the Lady Bulldawgs. … Gallup shot just 33 percent against Alamogordo and didn’t pull away until a game-ending 10-2 run in the final two minutes. Of note: Junior F Bethany Self scored 14 points and senior G Briana Hernandez added 13 points and 10 rebounds in PHS’ fourth win of the season over District 4-3A rival Ruidoso. … The defending 3A champion Lady Rams are seeking a seventh consecutive trips to the state finals, and looking for their fifth title in that time. … It’s been at least a few years since Portales and St. Mike’s have met, and 21-year veteran Gomez said she couldn’t remember ever playing the Lady Horsemen in postseason. … St. Mike’s has beaten the No. 4 (SFIS) and No. 5 (Socorro) seeds to get here. … The Lady Horsemen overcame 28-percent FG shooting (13-of-47) and 19 turnovers in the quarters against their in-city rival. … A layup by junior P Jordan Miller and two free throws by junior P Melissa Peterson capped a seesaw win over SFIS. Peterson finished with a game-high 16 points. … Gomez said St. Mike’s reminds her of Roswell High or Roswell Goddard in terms of style, adding that the Lady Horsemen like to occasionally change up their defenses.
