RIO RANCHO — After jumping out to a 9-2 lead, Clovis weathered a five-run fifth inning by Santa Fe and held on for a 9-7 victory Thursday in the first round of the Rio Rancho Invitational Thursday.
Clovis (5-1) advanced to play Farmington, a 8-3 winner over Highland earlier Thursday, in the semifinals at 3:30 p.m. today.
Senior Jonathan Ware picked up the win for Clovis, going 4 1/3 innings with two strikeouts and giving up three earned runs. Sophomore Parker Wood struck out four in 2 2/3 hitless innings to pick up the save.
“We had a good lead and I tried to let Johnny work his way out of it,” Clovis coach Shane Shallenberger said. “But then Parker came in and did a great job for the save.”
Senior shortstop Cade Wheeler went 2-3 from the plate with two runs batted in, and turned a double play in the bottom of the sixth with Ware and sophomore Omar Sosa to end the inning.
Of Santa Fe’s seven runs, four were earned as the Wildcats made five errors.
“We ended up kicking the ball around a bit,” he said. “But we can’t blame the runs on the field.”
Senior catcher T.J. Farmer went 2-4 with one run batted in and drew one walk.
Junior first baseman Herbert Romero went 2-4 with a run batted in for the Demons.
