ALBUQUERQUE — Portales’ squads swept into the semifinals of the state Class 1A-3A team tennis competition with victories on Friday at Academy High School.
The Portales boys, seeded fifth, upended Sandia Prep 6-3 while the second-seeded Lady Rams advanced with an 8-1 trouncing of Cobre.
Brothers Walker and Skyler Partin won in straight sets in singles and teamed up for a 6-2, 7-6 win over the Sundevils’ Ross Arias and Kyle Sears at No. 1 doubles, winning the second-set tiebreaker 7-4.
Colton Stanton at No. 5 and Sunny Liu at No. 6 each won in three sets for the Rams in singles, and Stanton teamed with Ethan Riser for a 6-3, 6-2 decision over Tim hebenstreit and Akash Prinza at No. 3 doubles.
The Rams face a stiff challenge today in an 8 a.m. semifinal against top-seeded Las Vegas Robertson, which dispatched eighth-seeded Ruidoso 9-0.
“I just feel like we’ve improved every week,” Rams coach Wade Fraze said. “Sandia Prep’s a good team, but I felt like the kids showed a little bit of heart.”
The Lady Rams will meet third-seeded St. Michael’s, a 9-0 first-round winner over Lovington on Friday, in an 8 a.m. semifinal today. Top-seeded Bosque faces fourth-seeded Sandia Prep in the other semifinal.
Portales won five of six singles and all three doubles matches, all in straight sets. The Lady Rams’ Kassandra Bryant was defeated in straight sets at No. 4 singles.
“We played really well today,” Portales girls coach Michelle Wallis said.
No other particulars were available on the match with Cobre at press time.
Both championship matches are scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
