Two bogus payroll checks totaling more than $1,300 have been cashed at a Portales grocery store, police said.
The checks listed Freedom Newspapers of New Mexico as the payee and were drawn on First Bank of Clovis.
A Portales police report shows FirstBank is now known as First Community Bank and has also been known as Access Bank.
Newspaper officials said they do not have an account at First Community Bank, but banked at FirstBank more than five years ago. Officials with First Community Bank told police the account number on the counterfeit checks does not match any of its account numbers.
Newspaper Publisher Ray Sullivan said he is not familiar with the names listed on the forged checks.
No arrests have been made.
