Reporter’s Notebook: Lions grant given to victims

THE CLOVIS EVENING LIONS CLUB was recently able to help 80 local families affected by the March 23 tornado through a grant from Lions International, according to member Merle Terry.

Families in need were identified by several local school principals and each was given a $100 gift card for food at S&S Supermarket.

Terry said club members work closely through the schools in other programs they sponsor and felt school administrators would be able to help find families with needs.

THE GIFT CARDS were handed out in April, Terry said.

The grant the local Lions club received was $10,000 and an additional $1,000 was donated by another Lions Club chapter he said.

The remaining $3,000 was distributed to families in Logan who lost their homes, he said. The families identified did not have food needs, so the six families received $500 each to help meet expenses from the loss of their homes.

“THEY WERE VERY HAPPY,” he said. “We like to help.”
