Two teenage girls will be charged as juveniles in connection with a fight on Sunday afternoon, District Attorney Matt Chandler said.
The 17-year-old driver of an SUV that struck a 49-year-old man, causing injury to his arm, will be charged with leaving the scene of an accident causing injury, Chandler said.
A 16-year-old passenger of the vehicle will be charged with battery for a fight with another teen girl that preceded the accident, Chandler said.
The incidents occurred in the 2500 block of Axtell Street.
“Thank God it wasn’t worse, and I think we all learned a valuable lesson,” the 17-year-old girl’s mother said by telephone Thursday afternoon. She said it was an accident and her daughter had no intention of harming the man.
The Clovis News Journal erroneously reported that charges had been filed Wednesday; Chandler said he did not make the decision to file charges until Thursday.
The charges fall into the classification of delinquent acts, neither misdemeanors nor felonies under state statute.
A district judge will decide between a range of sentences from probation to a maximum of two years in the custody of the Children, Youth and Families Department, Chandler said.
