Signer, who had farmed southeast of Clovis for nine years, had “the best crops this year” that he had ever raised. … Secretary Rufus Jones of the Clovis Chamber of Commerce was asking area businessmen to be careful “in subscribing to the various war charities which are soliciting throughout the country.” … The United States Food Administration asked readers to “save food —120 million allies must eat” in an advertisement.
