LUBBOCK — The Clovis High volleyball team struggled through the first two games, then cruised to a game-clinching win in the third Tuesday night in a 25-23, 26-24, 25-11 victory over Lubbock High.

The Lady Wildcats (4-1), coming off a four-game win over Portales on Saturday for the championship in their own invitational tournament, trailed Lubbock by as many as five points in the first game before rallying to win, then pulled out a seesaw second game with the final two points — including a game-ending kill by junior Lainey Flatow.

“We didn’t handle the ball real well,” Clovis coach Darrel Ray said of the first two games. “We struggled after last weekend, but Lubbock High did a really good job.”

The Lady Cats trailed 22-19 in the second game before pulling it out for a 2-0 lead. Ray said Flatow’s kill seemed to take some of steam out of the Westerners.

“We needed that right there,” Ray said. “From that point on, they didn’t compete nearly as well.”

Flatow finished with 12 kills for the Lady Cats, while senior Jasmine McDonald and sophomore Antiesha Brown each had eight.

Ray said a match scheduled for Thursday night against Santa Fe High at Rock Staubus Gym has been pushed back a week, to Sept. 13. Clovis’ next outing will be on Tuesday at Roswell Goddard.
