Zias fall twice on first day of tourney

SEARCY, Ark. — The Eastern New Mexico University volleyball team had chances on Friday against quality opponents, but came up short both times in a tournament hosted by Harding University.

The Zias (2-9) saw their losing streak reach seven with setbacks to Henderson State (Ark.) 30-21, 35-33, 33-31 and to Missouri Southern 30-19, 26-30, 30-21, 30-24.

Senior Jessie Macknicki led the Zias against Henderson State, compiling 13 kills, 17 digs and three aces. Vanessa Wildox added 11 kills and Caitlin Murphy contributed 10.

Henderson State (6-1) dominated the first game, but had to fight off ENMU in each of the next two sets. Rose Euppah posted a match-high 18 kills with only five attack errors for Henderson State.

Against Missouri Southern, junior middle blocker Megan Weitz had 13 kills apiece while setter Karen McIntyre compiled 18 digs. The Lady Lions (8-3) dominated ENMU in the first game, but the Zias bounced back as Weitz had five kills and two blocks in a second-game win.

Sarah Hoffmeister had 13 kills and 13 digs for Missouri Southern.

ENMU finishes up in the event with matches against Washburn and host Harding today.
