Tucumcari mayor resigns, cites poor health as reason

Mary Mayfield resigned Thursday as city commissioner and mayor of Tucumcari, effective immediately.

Mayfield, elected mayor in 2004, is the first woman in the city’s history to serve as mayor.

She had been advised by medical professionals to resign, according to her letter of resignation.

“As some of you know, my health has been an issue for the past year,” she wrote.

She also said that serving as commissioner and mayor has been a real “highlight of my life.”

Mayfield could not be reached Thursday night for comment.

City Manager John Sutherland said he was examining city ordinances to determine whether the city needs to hold a special election or make an appointment to the commission.

The City Commission is expected to address the vacancy at its next meeting on Sept. 27, Sutherland said.
