PLAINVIEW, Texas — The Eastern New Mexico University women’s soccer team scored twice in the first seven minutes on Friday and the Zias made those goals stand up, edging Wayland Baptist 2-1 to set a school record with their sixth consecutive victory.

The previous record was a five-match winning streak during the 2005 campaign.

ENMU (6-2) jumped on top barely two minutes into the match when sophomore forward Samantha Lawrence scored her fourth goal of the season on an assist from sophomore midfielder April Funck. The Zias added to their lead with 6:47 gone in the match when senior forward Amy Wilcox scored what turned out to be the deciding goal for a second consecutive match.

The last Eastern player to accomplish that feat was the graduated Megan Dozier, who did it in the first two matches of the 2006 campaign.

Wayland’s Kayla Lucas cut the margin in half when she converted a header off a pass from Danielle Purcelle late in the half.

Senior goalkeeper Stephanie Sanchez made seven saves for her 25th career win in the net for ENMU.

The Zias open Lone Star Conference action on Sunday with a noon clash against rival West Texas A&M at the ENMU pitch. In the second half of the doubleheader, scheduled for 2:30 p.m., ENMU’s men take on league favorite Midwestern State in a Southwest Soccer Conference clash.
