Hay fire erupts at Roosevelt County dairy

Firefighters from multiple area departments were on the scene Friday night fighting a hay fire at Grande Vida Dairy, approximately nine miles east of Portales.

As darkness fell flames could be seen by motorists traveling U.S. 70 between Portales and Clovis.

According to Portales Fire Department Battalion Chief Lance Hill his department was summoned to the fire around 4:30 p.m. Friday.

He said multiple large haystacks were involved as well as one barn. He said at least seven units from various departments, including Portales, Clovis, Dora, Floyd, Texico, Arch and Elida were assisting with the fire.

He said firefighters expect it to burn for two to three days. The Grande Vida Dairy took heavy damage during the March 23 tornado.
