A nonprofit organization that uses proceeds from its retail operations to fund workforce development training programs plans to open a branch in Clovis.
Goodwill Industries of New Mexico will open a facility Dec. 6 at 2005 N. Prince St. (the old Hancock Fabric location), according to Shauna O’Cleireachain, marketing director.
The facility will also house job training and placement staff to provide skill development and job opportunities for people with employment barriers.
“We anticipate serving over 100 Clovis area residents in the first program year and placing 20 in competitive community employment,” said Mary Montano, Goodwill Industries fund development manager.
Goodwill provides free services for people with employment barriers such as learning disabilities, physical challenges, felony history, single parenthood or childcare issues, according to Montano.
Montano said staff provides vocational assessments, skills training, job placement assistance and retention services.
The staff will also conduct various training classes including — computer skills, interview training, resume building and customer service skills.
“Goodwill is the final tier of assistance,” Montano said. “We provide services to clients who are ready for job training and community employment.”
Goodwill plans to hire between 20 and 24 employees, O’Cleireachain said.
“We are hiring for management to entry-level positions,” she said.
The retail store will include the collection and sale of donated goods as well as new products that Goodwill purchases from a variety of retailers.
“We (Goodwill Industries) are currently remodeling the building,” O’Cleireachain said. “Our workers are putting the finishing touches on the facility.”
Goodwill also has facilities in Albuquerque, Santa Fe, Rio Rancho, Gallup and Roswell.
