Construction on a Main Street gateway should begin soon, according to Clovis MainStreet Director Robyne Beaubien.

Construction drawings are being routed through the appropriate offices for approval and construction will begin when permits are obtained, Beaubien said.

Two 15-foot-tall pillars will be constructed in the 100 block of Main Street. They are modeled after decorative design on the facade of the Hotel Clovis and will be surrounded by faux cobblestone, she said. Each take up two parking spaces, with a Clovis MainStreet plaque atop them.

“Our dream would be to have these eventually at every entry to the downtown district,” she said.

The gateway is part of an effort to create an aesthetically pleasing “streetscape,” she said.

Funding for the project is drawn from $300,000 in state money awarded to Clovis MainStreet for downtown beautification projects.

The gateway and recently installed benches and trash cans are part of phase one of the project, she said.
