What do five men, all down on their luck and searching for a purpose, have in common? On February 22 in Marshall Auditorium, it will be a very special white suit as the National Hispanic Cultural Center (NHCC) brings Ray Bradbury’s The Wonderful Ice Cream Suit to Clovis. This 7 p.m. performance is part of the Cultural Arts Series sponsored by Clovis Community College and the Citizens Bank of Clovis. It is made possible through a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts and the New Mexico Cultural Affairs.
Performed by Teatro Nuevo México (TNM), a Latino theater company in Albuquerque, The Wonderful Ice Cream Suit follows six poverty-stricken men who band together to share one perfect white suit and embark on a magical and hilarious journey of self-discovery and friendship. It is a gentle story of discovering just what is genuinely important in life. Bradbury’s play was made into a movie in 1998 starring Edward James Olmos and Esai Morales. Since then, the theatrical version has been staged throughout the United States.
The production of The Wonderful Ice Cream Suit marks an ongoing collaboration between the NHCC and TNM who have worked in partnership for the past four years on numerous productions. Teatro Nuevo México was formed in 2003 by veteran actors, playwrights, directors, designers, and community activists in Albuquerque. The company’s mission is to present unique Latino perspectives of humanity through theatre, multi-arts, and community outreach. Directing The Wonderful Ice Cream Suit is Albuquerque actor, director, storyteller, and teacher Michael D. Blum. Blum has been a fixture on the Albuquerque theatre scene for over 25 years. He was one of the founding members of La Compañía de Teatro de Albuquerque, and is also a founding member and co-artistic director of Teatro Nuevo México. He has worked with several other Albuquerque theatre companies, as well as with theaters in Europe and South America.
“Michael Blum is a highly talented actor and accomplished director,” said Christy Mendoza, director of the Cultural Arts Series. “I’ve known of this production for a number of years and am thrilled to present it in Clovis. That is it free to the public is an added bonus!”
