PLAINVIEW – Calling all aspiring actors!
The Wayland University theatre department is looking for high school actors to participate in a summer theatre workshop culminating in a professional theatre performance opportunity. Slated June 1-20, 2008, the Third Annual Sacramento Mountain Theatre Collaborative begins with a 10-day theatre workshop and rehearsals at the Wayland campus in Plainview, under the direction of WBU Theatre Director Dr. Marti Runnels. The final 10 days of the workshop continues in Ruidoso, N.M., with the final performance slated for June 20 at the majestic Spencer Theatre for the Performing Arts in Ruidoso.
While in Plainview, students will lodge in campus dormitories while rehearsing and getting hands-on experience in all aspects of a college and professional theatre production in an intensive, focused format. In Ruidoso, students will be housed in the Upper Canyon Road, a mountain setting complete with log cabins on a stream. Recreation opportunities in Ruidoso will be provided for a break from the rigorous schedule.
“This collaborative will involve graduate students, current Wayland undergraduate students and, of course, high school students who will work together in producing a show at the Spencer Theatre,” said Runnels. “The students gain valuable experience by participating in a production of this level and with such an intensive focus.”
This summer’s production is the Agatha Christie hit The Mousetrap, the longest running play in the world. A murder mystery, the play involves a wide cast and is a familiar piece for Runnels, who directed it at Wayland in 2001.
Runnels said ideal auditioners should be at least sophomores, with a year of high school theatre experience minimum and a grade point average of at least 3.0. Applicants should audition in person if possible or submit a videotaped audition consisting of a longer monologue or two contrasting monologues, no more than 3 ½ minutes total. A student must also submit three letters of recommendation – one from the student himself, one from a school administrator and one from someone unconnected to the school – as well as a letter from a parent or guardian giving permission to participate and a commitment to financial support.
Deadline to apply and audition is March 31.
Runnels noted that the June 1 start date can be flexible for any students who may be selected if it conflicts with their high school graduation ceremony or any other conflict relative to the end of school.
The cost for students is $575, which covers all lodging and meals for the 20-day collaborative. Students may also earn college credit during the summer experience, and should discuss this with Runnels if accepted into the program. A deposit of $200 is due by April 15 for students who are selected for the collaborative.
