A Clovis man was sentenced today to 19 years imprisonment for the death of a 9-month old child, according to a press release from District Attorney Matt Chandler.
Leroy “Roy” Jaramillo, 44, was convicted Jan. 25 of child abuse resulting in death.
The sentence Jaramillo received was the maximum allowed by law, according to the press release.
In October 2004 the child, Cristyan Ibarra, was taken to the emergency room at Plains Regional Medical Center. The mother said she left the baby with Jaramillo for about 15 minutes and when she returned he was unresponsive and convulsing, the release said.
The child died at a Lubbock hospital three days later from head injuries. Based on expert testimony at the trial, the child died of injuries consistent with “shaken baby syndrome,” the release said.
Jaramillo will be required to serve 85 percent of his sentence before he is eligible for parole.
