A former Curry County Commissioner has announced his intention to seek his former seat.

Paul D. Barnes, 64, plans to run for the seat in District 5, which he filled from 1991 through 2000.

“I’ve enjoyed the years I’ve served my county, and I had a lot of encouragement from a lot of people,” said Barnes, a Democrat and a farmer and rancher for more than 40 years. “There’s still a challenge for whoever is in there.”

Caleb Chandler and Charles Guthals also announced their intention to run for the District 5 seat currently held by Tim Ashley, who reached his two-term limit.

The candidate sign-up date for the 2008 Curry County elections is March 18. The primary is June 3 and the general election is Nov. 4.

Barnes spent 10 years on the Texico school board prior to his county term. He said his top interests are road improvements and fairgrounds improvements, projects he said are always ongoing.

He said he is a lifelong resident of Curry County.
