Two boxers who train in Clovis will be making their way to the regional round of this year’s Golden Gloves following Sunday’s state finals at Roy Walker Community Center.
Superheavyweight Elijio Sena and Edgar Zubia at 141 pounds won their divisions and helped the Clovis Boxing Club take the overall team championship. Further individual glory is what Sena and Zubia have in mind, however, and they’ll get a chance at it in two weeks when New Mexico’s titlists take on the champs from Colorado.
Championships were contested in nine weight classifications.
For Sena, the best thing about his four-round decision over Albuquerque’s Gary Kavanaugh in the 201+ pound division was that he still have some bounce in his step and some zing in his punches at the end.
