Reporter’s Notebook: Pageant newcomer succeeds

A relative newcomer to pageantry from Clovis walked away with four crowns, in the 7-9 year-old category the 2008 New Mexico State Universal Pageant last weekend in Albuquerque.
Monica Romero, 8, of Clovis was crowned most beautiful, best portfolio, most photogenic and best talent, according to Maggie Chavez, state director for the Universal Miss Pageant.
She sang “Colors of the Wind” from the Disney movie Pocahontas during the talent competition. The Ranchvale Elementary student said she chose the song because she watched the movie when she was younger.
“I used to watch Pocahontas a lot, when I was little. You know, when I was 7,” she said.
She was competing in her third pageant.

Monica has been under the tutelage of her mother, Yolanda Romero, who competed in pageants herself.
“I feel more confident when she is watching me,” said Monica, who practices her singing in the vehicle to and from school the other pageant skills in their living room when she has a chance.
Monica competed with her friend, Adalee Alvarez, 5, from Portales, who was crowned grand supreme in her age group.
