The Clovis City Commission approved a $33.1 million preliminary budget for the 2009 fiscal year during a special meeting Tuesday at the Bert Cabiness Government Center.
The budget includes $83,000 for an assistant city manager position. The assistant city manager position has been vacant and unfunded for three years, according to city officials.
Community Relations Manager Claire Burroughes is being considered for the position, according to city officials. If approved for the new position Burroughes could receive a $26,000 salary increase.
City Manager Joe Thomas said the position has not officially been offered to Burroughes and the preliminary budget is subject to change.
City Commissioner Juan Garza said there was concern expressed from audience members Tuesday about the position, especially with the salary. Garza said he expects a lower salary for the position when the final budget is presented to the commission.
Garza said the preliminary budget includes a 3 percent cost of living increase for city employees.
