Monday morning Clovis and Portales members of U.S. Rep. Tom Udall, D-N.M.’s campaign protested what they said was U.S. Rep. Steve Pearce, R-N.M.’s support of big oil, outside Town and Country Food Stores at Prince Street and Llano Estacado Boulevards.
“(Last week) Pearce voted not to support a bill that would have prevented oil companies from participating in price gouging,” protest spokesman Travis Kellerman said. “All the help he’s done for the big oil community isn’t helping the average American.”
Pearce campaign spokesman Brian Phillips said Pearce believes in increasing supply to reduce fuel prices and stands behind his decision not to sign the legislation.
“It was a poor piece of legislation that was simply symbolic,” Phillips said. “There’s no relationship between the price gouging legislation and the current price of gas. All that is, is a way for them to (vilify) big oil and will do nothing to lower the price of gas.”
