A college baseball coaching legend who grew up on the dusty plains of Roosevelt County is ending his 38-year career in Lubbock.
Larry Hays is the fourth winningest coach in NCAA baseball history with a career record of 1,509-860 after 16 years coaching Lubbock Christian and 22 years as head coach at Texas Tech.
Last month, Hays retired from Tech leaving the sport he coached in each of the past five decades.
Hays was born in Elida, and went to school in Dora, where he played baseball and basketball at Dora High School.
Texas Tech’s all-time leader in victories credits his basketball coach at Dora, Bob Buchannan, as having a major influence on his life and career.
