Well, Sen. John McCain has largely succeeded in his mission to firmly claim control of the Republican Party and to give his campaign the largest possible boost going into the fall contest for the White House.
First off, McCain went to the Republican National Convention still struggling to convince the conservative grass roots they should ignore his image as a maverick and accept him as one of their own. But one single move, the selection of Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin as his running mate, cleared away the doubts and electrified Republicans in a way that just baffles Democrats and much of the national media. A new clamor for GOP unity emerged from the floor of the Republican convention to sweep the country.
