Sophomore defender Christie Nylaan scored off a corner kick by junior Kim Anaya in the first minute and the Eastern New Mexico University women’s soccer team never looked back on Friday, beating Wayland Baptist 6-2 at the ENMU pitch.
Freshman midfielder Andrea Elizondo scored two goals and added an assist for ENMU (3-3), which has won three in a row, all at home. Junior forward Samantha Lawrence added her team-leading fifth goal plus an assist.
ENMU took a 4-0 lead after 32 minutes on sophomore forward Alicia Cunningham’s second goal of the season, but the Pioneers (1-3-1) got two goals from Kayla Lewis — the last coming with two seconds left in the half — to pull within two.
Junior midfielder Michelle Sumner scored in the 63rd minute to make it a three-goal margin, and Elizondo finished off the scoring on an assist by junior midfielder Leslie Webber at the 82:03 mark.
ENMU outshot the Pioneers 39-7 overall, including 26-4 in shots on goal. The Zias also had a 9-1 edge in corner kicks.
ENMU opens Lone Star Conference play on Monday with a 4 p.m. (MDT) start at rival West Texas A&M.
