Counterfeit bills in circulation

Portales and Clovis have both seen counterfeit $50 and $100 bills in the past week, said Portales Police Capt. Lonnie Berry.

One Portales business on South Chicago called police last week after receiving a fake $50 bill, Berry said. Others refused to accept suspicious bills and then called police to ask if counterfeit money has been a problem.

Berry said he contacted the district attorney’s investigator Monday and learned Clovis was having problems as well.

This time of year, scams and counterfeit money become problems, Berry said. He advised people to be aware of any bills that seem different.

Counterfeit bills may be cut incorrectly, feel different than normal, have incorrect printing or don’t contain the security tape normally inside $50 and $100 bills. Berry asked anyone who sees suspicious money to call the Portales Police at 356-4404.
