Portales teen convicted for aggravated burglary

An 18-year-old Portales man is facing up to 12 years in prison for beating and severely injuring an 82-year-old woman while burglarizing her home, according to a press release from the district attorney’s office.

Joel Zertuche was convicted Friday of aggravated burglary and conspiracy to commit aggravated burglary.

According to the release:

• Police responding to a 911 call March 30 found the victim lying on her porch with extensive injuries, including a broken hip.

• Two others were arrested in the case. Jay Brian Stewart, 21, is serving a six-year sentence and Preston Blake, 25, is awaiting trial.

• Zertuche will be sentenced in the next three months.
