Teen who slipped ankle bracelet program avoids capture

Tuesday, police got close but couldn’t nab an 18-year-old wanted for escaping the jail’s ankle bracelet program.

Just after noon, a Clovis police officer spotted and chased Fermin Rodriguez on foot in the 500 block of Ninth Street, but lost sight of him when he ducked around a corner, police Capt. Patrick Whitney said.

Officers have dealt with Rodriguez many times in the past and, “they know him on sight,” Whitney said.

Rodriguez was awaiting trial for robbery and battery when he removed his ankle bracelet Jan. 13 and fled from his residence.

A warrant was issued for Rodriguez for escape from the custody of a community release program and criminal damage.

Because of the nature of the charges Rodriguez is facing, and “for public safety reasons,” Whitney said anyone with knowledge of Rodriguez’ whereabouts is encouraged to contact police or can remain anonymous by calling Curry County Crime Stoppers at 763-7000.
