Here is a sad, undisputed fact: About 350,000 rather wealthy people at “the top” own as much as the entire bottom half of the remaining 300-plus million people in America, the land of the free.
In a nutshell, what has happened is we have pursued a living within a system that blatantly milks the productivity of the many for the benefit of the few … because the few are running the system.
Big money rules … blah, blah, blah.
What’s hard for me to understand is so many otherwise reasonable people think this is just fine. I’ll get mine eventually, etc. The rich are cool.
No. The rich (not always personally, but institutionally), are exploiting everyone else. Of course this is always so, but it has now become sick and absurd.
Except for the fact that we can still vote in large numbers, this country would be approaching chaos in the streets just now. Roosevelt and Curry counties are somewhat insulated from this thanks to (gasp!) government: Cannon Air Force Base, Eastern New Mexico University, farm subsidies, etc.
Think about it … where would we be otherwise?
This is not to say government is wise. Anyone deal with the Department of Motor Vehicles lately?
But so far, government is still subject to the vote. And it is still essential for the economy.
Slightly more than half of the country (unfortunately not Curry and Roosevelt counties) voted for a better, more progressive direction this time.
All the evidence suggests Clovis and Portales will be better off because of a progressive direction most of us here could not be convinced to join this time around.
May we have more good sense next time.
