PORTALES — Andrew Helton didn’t take long to land his first in-state hoops star for Eastern New Mexico University.

Jordan Romero, a 6-foot-1, 170-pound guard from St. Michael’s,
signed a letter of intent to play basketball for the Greyhounds, who
introduced Helton as their new coach April 28.

Romero was a five-year varsity member for the Horsemen, won two
Class 3A state titles and led St. Michael’s to a title-game appearance
this season. He led the Horsemen with 16.1 points, 5.1 rebounds, 3.5
assists and 2.8 steals per game this year.

During his interview process and his introduction, Helton said his
success at ENMU would be predicated on his ability to grab a mix of
in-state and out-of-state players.

“We are very excited that Jordan will be a Greyhound,” Helton said.
“He brings a great feel for the game and comes from a very successful
high school program. He is an excellent young man whose guard skills
and work ethic will really benefit our program.”
