No, Nicholas Mufli is not a common name in Clovis.

But the name Muffley is know all over Clovis and respected. The history and story of Russell L. Muffley is one to remember.

The history of his ancestor goes back to 1737, but … this is Russell’s history.

Russell L. Muffley was born Sept. 25, 1947 in Galion, Ohio, to C. F. and Evelyn Loeffel Muffley, and lived in Mount Gilead, Ohio; Fort Recovery, Ohio; and Logansport, Ind., prior to moving to New Mexico when he was 16 years old.

Russell is a 1965 graduate of Las Cruces High School and Dallas Institute of Mortuary Science in 1968. He attended New Mexico State University, serving three years apprenticeship to become a licensed embalmer-funeral director in 1970.

He worked as a funeral director in Las Cruces, Artesia, and Clayton prior to moving to Clovis in 1975. He was manager of Sherwood Funeral Mortuary until April 1978 when he and his wife purchased what is now Muffley Funeral Home.

Russell is currently chairman of the Board of the Senior Citizen Resident Center in Clovis. In 2003, he was elected to a six-year term on the Board of Trustees of Clovis Community College.

In 1984, Muffley was active with his children’s activities and became involved with both Little League Baseball and Clovis Girls Softball Association.

Muffley has been honored as an “Outstanding Young Men of America” in 1981; Lion of the Year by the Clovis Monday Lions Club and as Wildcat Basketball “dad” in 1988-89.

Russell Muffley enjoyed being the “Sports Judge” in announcing football and basketball games with Patrick Davidson for KCLV-AM radio station for 13 years. His hobbies include golf and traveling, having visited all 50 states.

He and his wife Carolyn have three children, Amy N. Muffley, Odessa, Texas, Rodney W. Muffley, Clovis, Wendy J, (Brian) Cronk, Canyon, Texas, one grandson, Jordan R. Muffley and three granddaughters, Victoria Muffley, Cambree J. Cronk and Karlee J. Cronk. Russell also has 3 brothers, Donald A. (Jennae), Council Bluffs, Iowa, Raymond Douglas (Sue), Mt. Gilead, Ohio, and Wayne Eugene (Pat) Muffley, Parrish, Florida, 2 sisters, Donna Jean (Ken), Graham and Judith Evelyn Muffley of Mesa, Ariz.

I got to know Russell Muffley many years ago, being a visitor at the “sit-down” room at 1430 N. Thornton (near the alley) with all well known Clovis Men when they visited each weekday morning for an hour, having coffee and sometimes doughnuts, telling stories, and talking about Clovis.

You always get a lot of history in and around Clovis!
