ABILENE, Texas — Eastern New Mexico University and Hardin Simmons played to a 1-1 tie in men’s soccer on Tuesday, withthe match cut short by lightning and looming darkness early in the first overtime.

Trailing 1-0, the Greyhounds (7-3-2) pulled even when junior foward Emerson Rodrigues scored nearly 18 minutes into the second half after taking a pass from freshman midfielder Kal Herbert. It was the 30th goal for Rodrigues since coming to ENMU last year.

The Cowboys (5-1-3), members of the NAIA American South Conference, drew first blood when Cody McGrath scored just over eight minutes into the contest on an assist from Zach Johnson.

Each team managed five shots on goal in the match, with ENMU’s Alistair Caldwell and Hardin Simmons’ Logan Waters credited with four saves in goal. Overall, the Cowboys had an 18-10 advantage in shots and a 10-3 margin on corner kicks.

The match only went 84 seconds into overtime before play was stopped. After a wait of about 15 minutes, it was determined that the teams would not have enough light to resume.

The Hounds hit the road again this weekend, traveling to Alamosa, Colo., for a non-league matchup against Adams State. ENMU defeated the Grizzlies earlier this season in Portales.

Next Tuesday, the Hounds start a four-match homestand with a 4 p.m. non-league outing against Texas-Permian Basin.
