TAHLEQUAH, Okla. — Senior forward Samantha Lawrence scored her team-leading seventh goal of the season with eight minutes left in regulation, lifting Eastern New Mexico University to a 1-0 Lone Star Conference women’s soccer victory over Northeastern State on Sunday in the regular-season finale for both teams.
Lawrence took a pass from sophomore forward Tasha Caulder to give the Zias (9-10, 4-6 LSC) the lead late in what was otherwise a defensive battle. Already the career goals record-holder at ENMU, Lawrence’s tally was the 13th in her four seasons.
Northeastern (5-11-1, 1-8-1) had a corner kick with 1:17 left, but the Zias held them without a shot in the remaining time.
Sophomore Candice Guthrie made three saves in goal to improve her record to 2-1 for the season. She denied perhaps the RiverHawks’ best scoring opportunity, making a save on Celeste St. Gemme’s header with 12:27 left in the match.
With the win, the Zias improved to 3-4 all-time against Northeastern. They had lost the last two meetings in the series since posting a 3-0 win on Oct. 6, 2006.
