Furlough Frito pies

The Communications Workers of America Local 7076 has set up a fund to help ease the financial burden on state employees who have been furloughed.

Today, Fox’s Uptown Cafe in the Bataan Memorial Building will serve Frito pies for a donation to the fund.

“Even one day without pay will be difficult for our low-wage earners, five will mean less food on the table or a bill going unpaid,” CWA Local 7076 president Robin Gould said in a statement.

The union already has helped the lowest-income earners with a relief fund, but wants to help others with a goal of delivering relief checks of $50 to represented state employees who earn between $10 and $14 an hour.

The union is asking for donations from other employees and the public at large.

Donations may be sent to the First Community Bank in the name of CWA 7076 Furlough Relief Fund, or directly to the CWA Union Hall at 460 St. Michael’s Drive, Bldg. 1000, Ste. 1001, Santa Fe, N.M. 87505.

Gov. Bill Richardson last year ordered five days of unpaid leave for most state workers as a way to help solve the state’s budget crisis.
