Support will aid Chile in its recovery

Our thoughts go out to the people of Chile in the aftermath of the 8.8 magnitude earthquake that struck Saturday near the city of Concepcion. The quake is being called the fifth-largest ever recorded and hundreds of times more powerful than the quake that ravaged Haiti in January.

Collapsed highways, overturned cars, immense rubble, cracked buildings and hordes of displaced peoples are the images of the day. Infrastructural damage caused by the quake is visually stunning but the loss of life, more than 700 people and rising, is even harder to grasp.

While infrastructure can be replaced, buildings can be rebuilt and highways can be restored, life lost is irreparable.

The people of Chile are resilient and strong and have already begun to pull themselves from the destruction, rebuild their homeland and restore their way of life. In the coming days no doubt the Chilean people will emerge vigorously from this natural disaster.

Donations for relief to Chile can be made in several ways. The American Red Cross has already pledged $50,000. There are a number of organizations accepting donations via text message, such as the Salvation Army. If you text “CHILE” to 52000 you will automatically donate $10 to the Salvation Army’s relief efforts in Chile. These are just a few of the ways you can help.

We send a warm embrace to the victims and their families. Un abrazo fuerte a Chile.
