Letter to the editor: Practice civility instead of hate

What an uplifting letter from Mary Reed in the April 4 CNJ (“Rooting for Christian spirit’s return”).

I did not know Reed nor her grandmother but they exemplify in my mind what a true Christian is.

I, too, have been saddened by the vitriolic tone of speech of some supposedly “good” Christians in our community and elsewhere in the country. Showing hatred of another individual because of his or her political persuasion, ethnicity, or different religious beliefs will only make our country more divided.

I don’t know who said it, but I agree that we can be “adversaries without being enemies.” We live in a wonderful country and we should all embrace that fact and try to have civil discourse instead of so much hateful speech.

I am certainly far from being a Biblical scholar but Jesus himself was purported to have said “whatever ye do to the least of these, ye do also unto me.” Perhaps we should all keep that in mind before we express our opinions in a hateful manner.
