Press release: Helton signs forward from high-scoring California junior college

PORTALES, N.M. — Eastern New Mexico University men’s basketball coach Andrew Helton has announced the signing of Aaron Edwards (Jr., F, 6-7, 200, Gardena, Calif./San Bernardino Valley College/Gardena HS) to a National Letter of Intent to play for the Greyhounds in the upcoming 2010-11 season. He played for head coach Quincy Brewer and led the Wolverines to a 31-3 record with a berth in the state semifinals during the 2009-10 season.

In Edwards, the Greyhounds add a 6-7 post player which led SBVC to its first undefeated season in the conference and third consecutive FC championship. He participated in the most dominate offense in the state, ranking in the top three for the entire season and finishing first at the close of the regular season, by averaging 88 points per game. SBVC spent more time as the number one team in the state this season than any other team and was rewarded as the number one seed throughout the playoffs as well as the State Finals at Cal Lutheran University in Thousand Oaks.

“We are excited to have Aaron as a part of our program,” said Helton. “He is long, athletic, and skilled. Along with this, he plays with a great deal of passion and energy. Finally, he has been a part of an extremely talented and well coached program over the last two years at San Bernardino Valley College.”

Edwards made the most of his 22 minutes per game, averaging 12 point and 5.2 rebounds for the Wolverines. His performance propelled SBVC to a 14-0 record in the Foothills Conference and the top ranking in the entire state of California at the end of the regular conference. For his efforts, Edwards was selected First Team All-Foothill Conference and Honorable Mention All-State.
