Curry County commissioners on Wednesday said OK to the sale of alcohol during two concerts at the Events Center during the county fair.
Commissioners unanimously approved the measure.
Events Center Manager Kevin Jolley said alcohol will be sold in a roped area during the events — one on a Thursday night the other on a Saturday night — and will be tightly controlled.
The fair is scheduled Aug. 16-21.
Jolley said it is a way to enhance revenue and to some extent control use of alcohol during the events.
He said even though alcohol has never been sold at the fair, attendees often manage to sneak in alcohol, evidenced by bottles and cans found around the grounds after events, and fair security has to escort intoxicated patrons from the facility.
By offering a legitimate source of alcohol in a limited and controlled scenario, Jolley said it may help curb some of the past issues.
