Clovis police are investigating the death of a 2-year-old girl Sunday in a military housing unit.

Police and medical personnel were dispatched to 4221 Lew Wallace Drive just before 10 a.m. for a report of an unconscious child who wasn’t breathing.

Police Chief Steve Sanders said preliminary information indicates the child may have suffocated in a portable playpen where she was sleeping.

“The family was a guest of folks here and she was put in one of those play and pack playpens,” he said.

However, Sanders said further investigation, including a cause of death determination, is needed before a conclusion is reached.

Detectives were at the scene and an investigation is ongoing, Sanders said.
