Today in history

On this day in 1965, the biggest power failure in U.S. history occurs as all of New York state, portions of seven neighboring states, and parts of eastern Canada are plunged into darkness.

The Great Northeast Blackout began at the height of rush hour, delaying millions of commuters, trapping 800,000 people in New York’s subways, and stranding thousands more in office buildings, elevators, and trains.

Here’s the rest of the story:

Today — Mostly sunny. Windy. Highs in the mid 60s to lower 70s. Southwest winds 15 to 25 mph increasing to west 20 to 30 mph in the afternoon. Gusts up to 40 mph.

Tonight — Mostly clear. Windy…colder. Lows in the lower to mid 30s. West winds 20 to 30 mph decreasing to 10 to 15 mph after midnight. Gusts up to 40 mph.
