Livestock producers whose animals died because of recent cold weather should start gathering documentation and proof the deaths were caused by the weather, according to information from the U.S. Farm Service Agency and the office of Sen. Jeff Bingaman, D-N.M.

The FSA has a Livestock Indemnity Program, providing payments of about 75 percent of the fair market value of the eligible lost livestock.

On this day in 1943, Japanese troops evacuate Guadalcanal, leaving the island in Allied possession after a prolonged campaign.
