A Portales mechanic has been charged with possessing child pornography.

David L. Payton, 43, of Portales was arrested Thursday and charged with six counts of sexual exploitation of children by possession, according to a new release from the Roosevelt County Sheriff’s Office.

He would face a maximum sentence of nine years if convicted.

The charges stem from an investigation beginning in January, when Payton began downloading videos using peer-to-peer software, according to the release. Chief Deputy Malin Parker said the sheriff’s office has software that can scan the area and allow deputies to track downloads.

Deputies executed a search warrant of Payton’s home and found his computer with child pornography videos, according to the release. He was arrested on scene.

Friday afternoon, Payton remained in the Roosevelt County Detention Center on a $30,000 cash-only bond.
