Highlands beats Hounds late

PORTALES — Four New Mexico Highlands pitchers combined to limit Eastern New Mexico University to three hits and the Cowboys scored twice in the eighth inning for a 3-1 win over the Greyhounds on Tuesday in a non-conference game at Greyhound Field.

Justin Kaid’s two-run single with one out snapped a 1-all tie as starter Edgar Vela and three relievers combined to strike out 10 batters and walk four.

ENMU (3-15) scored in the seventh inning when junior shortstop Alex Schultz lead off with a walk, moved to second on a fielder’s choice, to third on Daniel Patch’s infield single, and scored on an errant throw.

Winning pitcher Richard Sandoval (1-0), Cruz Sedillo and Jared Bowser combined to retire the final eight ENMU batters. Browser earned his second save of the season.

Patch’s pinch-hit single extended his hitting streak to five games.

The Cowboys (8-8) push across a run in the fourth inning when Erik Scott doubled to right field and scored on two-out infield single from Angel Nunez.

Chris Martinez (1-0), the Hounds’ fourth of five pitchers, took the loss. He allowed three hits and two runs in two innings.

Aaron Anderson started for the Hounds, permitting three hits and a run in 3 2/3 innings. He struck out one and walked four.

Schultz went 2-for-3 for the Hounds.

Scott and Luis Saenz each doubled and had two hits for the Cowboys, who finished with 10 hits.
